【GD TODAY】In 1,215 days, what has a Guangdong doctor done in Dominica?
? ? ? ?This year marks the 60th anniversary of China sending its first medical aid team. Since sending its first medical team to Algeria in 1963, China has sent more than 30,000 medical staff members to 76 countries and regions around the world, treating nearly 300 million patients.
? ? ? ?On this occasion, China has announced eight role models for their contributions to providing healthcare overseas. Among them, Dr. Wu Dexi, a "post-80s" doctor from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU), is the one and only representative from Guangdong and the youngest.

? ? ? ?In Dominica, an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, almost half of its residents know this doctor from Guangdong, China.
? ? ? ?Due to genetics, and eating habits, a high incidence of cardiovascular disease is seen in Dominica. However, the local diagnosis and treatment level is comparable only to the international level in the 1990s.
? ? ? ?In June 2019, Dr. Wu was selected into the second batch of China (Guangdong) medical team to aid Dominica, and became a cardiovascular doctor in the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital. Owing to the different educational background, the local doctors were not optimistic about the young doctor from China in the beginning.
? ? ? ?Three years later, Dr. Wu has been recognized by them for his contribution to the diagnosis and treatment plan, and has become well-known in Dominica with his superb medical skills. Whoever has cardiovascular diseases, would think of Dr. Wu and the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital in the first place.
? ? ? ?For each patient, the consulting time would last for half an hour. He knows that many diseases bring about anxieties. Often, a seemingly ordinary chat and greeting could make patients trust the doctor more, with peace of mind. During 1,215 days, Dr. Wu received more than 5,000 patients there.
? ? ? ?Together with a local doctor, the first temporary pacemaker was successfully implanted to resuscitate the life of a critically ill patient who suffered severe bradycardia (very low heart rate). Such breakthroughs have been made over the past three years, which now can be conducted regularly in Dominica.

? ? ? ?Training local doctors is also an important job for him. Most local doctors major in general medicine or internal medicine, and their experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases is generally insufficient. It resulted in a high rate of misdiagnosis and missed diagnoses.
? ? ? ?Dr. Wu supervised the clinical clerkship of 11 medical students, and in May 2021, Dominica's first cardiovascular specialty was launched. Since then, patients with cardiovascular diseases no longer have to fly to neighboring countries or even Europe and the United States to get medical care.

? ? ? ?In October 2022, Dr. Wu returned to China, after he had extended his aid period twice. He was still concerned about the development of Dominica's healthcare and the health of local patients.
? ? ? ?Before returning to China, with the support of the National Health Commission of China, he successfully applied for a cooperation project with Dominica.
? ? ? ?On July 7, the China-Dominica Cardiovascular Imaging Center and Telemedicine Center were launched at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital. The FAH-SYSU was approved to implement this project.
? ? ? ?“China has sent five medical teams with some 30 experts to Dominica over the past 14 years. Among them, Dr. Wu Dexi alone has treated over 5,000 patients. An epitome of 60 years of Chinese foreign medical assistance,” Hua Chunying, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, posted on her social media platform.
